Book Review -- "Shoulda Been There" by Jude Kessler
'Shoulda Been There' is a remarkable journey into the heart and life of a kid from Liverpool who many thought would go no where. This book reveals the journey of John Lennon from birth up to when the Beatles signed with Brian Epstein in 1961. Reading this book was a very emotional journey for me as I often found myself moved by what I was reading. The narrative feels very real with conversations that give a "fly on the wall" feel to each reader as they read. I have come to really understand John's journey through reading this book.
Not many gave John a chance as John was perceived by many as a lost soul. In truth only a handful genuinely cared, believed in and loved John which makes his story for me, powerful and poignant. Jude Kessler's ability to get beneath the skin of John Lennon allows a reader to see John as he was then and feel his triumphs and tragedies. It allows each reader to look beyond the bravado and swagger and see the sensitive, beautiful spirit and genius that John possessed. It allows you to connect to him in a personal and unique way. 'Shoulda Been There' allows the reader to feel his heartbreak as he desperately sought love and to appreciate the courage and devotion displayed by his beloved Aunt Mimi.
Unlike other biographies, the cast and players in John's early life, live and breathe on the pages. Making it easy for the reader to get to know each person and see John through their eyes. Ms. Kessler's keen perceptive narrative abilities are a gift and as a reader of her book I am genuinely amazed. Jude Kessler has done an impressive job. "Shoulda Been There" is a must read for all who love or appreciate John Lennon and for all Beatles fans and Beatlemaniacs!.
Below is the author Jude Kessler. who has been on quite a remarkable journey to do this series. She has taken 7 trips to Liverpool and has spoken to quite a few people who knew John throughout his life. She has put 20 plus years of effort into this series and is thoroughly researched. She has produced two books so far "Shoulda Been There" (order by clicking link) and "Shivering Inside" and a third book is in the works. There are several more books planned and I for one recommend checking each one out. Jude Kessler recently appeared at New York's Beatlefest (2013). She also has a show called The John Lennon Hour on Pat Matthews' Beatlesarama on Sunday nights. Her website is The John Lennon Series
