Junior Press Conference At The Warwick Hotel 8/22/1966
August 22, 1966 Warwick Hotel New York City
The Beatles arrived in NYC from Cincinnati. Ohio around 3:50 am. After getting a bit of sleep the Beatles hold 2 press conferences. One being a regular press conference and the second one was just for fans only! It's come to be known as the Junior Press Conference. To get the fans for this, WMCA (a NYC radio station)and Gary Stevens (a disc jockey)asked listeners to send a postcard with their name, address and telephone number.
From the ones sent to the station 75 winners were selected at random. Of course with this being the height of Beatlemania WMCA was flooded with post cards. All in all the station received about 48,000 entries, which is not surprising. Besides the radio station’s contest, a similar contest was sponsored by the Official American Beatles Fan Club who also selected 75 winners out of their entries. In total 150 very lucky fans got to attend the junior press conference and meet the Beatles and ask questions!!
At the end of the press conferences, John Lennon was presented with a custom made Guild Starfire XII electric 12-string guitar from the Guild Guitar Company, out of Hoboken, New Jersey. The guitar was presented to John by Mark Dronge, the son of the company’s founder Alfred Dronge. Which from the sounds of it topped off a really cool day for 150 lucky fans and for the guys as well.
