July 12, 1964 Jimmy Nicol on bill with The Beatles

Today in Beatles History July 12, 1964 The Beatles play the Hippodrone, Brighton & on the bill as well was the band, The Shubdubs which was Jimmy Nicol's band. Jimmy Nicol as many of you know was the drummer who filled in for Ringo when Ringo was ill & could not do the tour.

Of the July 12,1964 venue Jimmy said in 1987, "I had a band and Brian put us on the same bill with The Beatles and The Fourmost one night. Backstage, we talked, but the wind had changed since we last saw each other. They were pleasant."

The tour Jimmy did with The Beatles almost didn’t happen as George was adamant about not touring without Ringo.

"They nearly didn’t do the Australia tour. George is a very loyal person, and he said, ‘If Ringo’s not part of the group, it’s not The Beatles. I don’t see why we should do it, and I’m not going to.’ It took all of Brian’s and my persuasion to tell George that if he didn’t do it he was letting everybody down. Jimmie Nicol was a very good drummer, who came along and learnt Ringo’s parts well. Obviously, he had to rehearse with the guys. They came and worked through all the songs at Abbey Road so he got to know them. He did the job excellently, and faded into obscurity immediately afterwards"

George Martin, Anthology.

Good article Brenda! I just finished researching Jimmie Nicol's career for 8 years. The result is the first historic account of Nicol. The book is called, The Beatle Who Vanished. It tracks his career before he got the call to help out The Beatles, and goes in depth into his tour with the Boys, and how he dealt with the "15 minutes of fame" for the rest of his life. You and your readers can download a free excerpt at: www.thebeatlewhovanished.com Sincerely, Jim Berkenstadt
